In an era of profound change, spatial perceptions were increasingly prevalent within our shelters, altering our conception of living and working spaces. Confronted with multiple boundaries, the artists were encouraged to explore the meanings of home and other everyday spaces, all condensed in our immediate environment. This resonated with their practice, as their working habits were disrupted, further confronting them with the notion of concealment.

Elpmas Series #2, a sound performance by Alan Affichard
Location: Schlachtensee Berlin (GE)
Affichard’s practice explores the limits and possible extensions of manufactured and handcrafted objects. Using raw materials and instruments of his own making, he takes sound samples and creates improvised scores that spawn singular sound situations.
The artist’s performances and installations expressed an implicit dialogue among layers of sound, sometimes overlapping and sometimes migrating from one to another. He invited us to broaden our understanding of the intrinsic properties of the objects that comprise his work.
Affichard recorded three sounds on site in the immediate vicinity of the residency, which are now part of his sound library. Through modifications, rough friction, vibrations, and other electroacoustic phenomena, an organic sound composition was produced for Elpmas Series #2.
oh Spring, an olfactory installation by Aiko Shimotsuma
Location: Schlachtensee Berlin (GE)
A scent drifts through the air — can we name it?
Ephemeral and unseen, it awakens a flood of memories.
In this site-specific olfactory installation, two women journey into the labyrinths of the past. Childhood recollections resurface in painters’ studios, fluid and geometric forms, raw materials, and chemical essences. From these fragments, a formidable narrative unfolds, weaving associations and a sense of belonging—while the lake itself emerges as the enigmatic source of the scents.
